hello!!!!!

i rembered this blog exists

hi!

it's been a little while hasn't it!! hasn't it.

i've... been living. it looks like the thing i mentioned last time didn't explode the website, so that's good. i said in the summary there that i rembered this blog exists but of course it's hard to forget since i keep keeping a tab open. i was just going to do something else just now but then i thought, oh, might as well post here

so here is, indeed, a post!! let's see what i've been up to

cataloguing and barcodes and stuff

well i haven't got up to much with my barcode reader yet, but i am making a catalogue system. unlike in december, i've actually got a catalogue system almost fit for the extremely limited purpose of "putting my cds in there and putting them in a box". this will let me know what cds i have, which is useful and good. more features will undoubtedly follow!

i'm makin the software in rust, and i have some feelings about this but i guess the top one is "i wish i didn't have to use serde". serde is convenient, but it's just so damn big, and i don't really like the whole "a crate for each feature" thing going on. but by this point serde is just unadvoidable, due to everything using it. even if i didn't use it one of my deps would pull it in. ah well.

other than that complaint, there's actually surprisingly few issues just making a thing that interfaces with a sqlite database. i was going to alternatively go with python (which you know i use a lot) but turns out that no, actually, it's fairly simple to put structured data in a database even in rust. neat! i hope i won't run into any other problems, but i don't anticipate i will since most of this thing should just consist of the structs i use to define objects, and accessing the database, and a few html templates to enable interfacing with it.

oh, speaking of html templates, minijinja is good!!! it has barely any dependencies - i think the only required one is serde, which, see above, but i already depended on it for a number of other things. and it does jinja2 templates, which i was already familiar with. neat!

anyway, i'm not sure why i keep calling this a "catalogue system" when i'm fairly sure it's not a "catalogue" per se, more like an inventory management system for things that never leave the inventory. but it's my blog, so you can't stop me (if you want to stop me see my contact details on the about page and/or contact me with details you already have).

also, i'm gonna get a label printer. to put barcodes on things. i will become unstoppable

music

oh i uhhhh am getting into coaltar of the deepers. i'd already been aware of them for several years due to a thing but i'd never really got into them. but someone i know (shout outs, you know who you are etc) has been listening to them recently which got me to buy their album yukari telepath, and damn it is pretty good!!! 💭 i keep wondering if coaltar is the dual of altar, though.

other than that i bought a bunch of cds recently, perhaps most notably the album 0 by Low Roar, who you probably know from how Hideo Kojima liked their stuff a bunch and put them in Death Stranding. i heard about them on youtube due to that. this buying of cds is, in part, why i'm making the cd cataloguing system (i really need to get all my cds off their temporary storage places on the floor and into my new and fancy big piece of storage furniture)

as for what i'm listening... much the same honestly. the bokita song is still top of my last three months, etc.

for a while now i've been meaning to get back into playing guitar. i've, finally, almost kinda got into it. now i just uhhh have to remember how to play guitar. i've got some chords down but the manual dexterity i have isn't great and i never figured out the fancier things i'd like to do. (i also want to build a harley benton les paul clone kit but that's, beside the point,)

input methods

oh yeah i'm not sure i ever mentioned but a while back i finally set up fcitx and mozc on linux so i can Finally input... well, all sorts of things, primarily japanese but also, like, emoji. though there's no emoji picker rn, i'm just using the generic "pick unicode by name" option. 🦊

the move

like i mentioned most of a year ago, i moved to a new place this year. but the move is still kinda in progress (see "temporary storage place of cds" etc above).

that said, the place is nice. it is bigger, and i have in fact have had people come over. i had plenty of help with moving but still, it was surprisingly painless compared to what i was prepared for. i even got my midi keyboard setup, finally, now that there's space.

also, it turns out my expenses have actually gone down despite the new place being more expensive, so we're good on that front too, though it does mean "i basically spend very little money other than the essentials". that's fine - i'm far from feeling like my needs are going unmet here. i'll probably have to defer some big photography purchases indefinitely but that was kind of already the case anyway.

and speaking of photography, i've barely done any of it since the move. i don't even know the birds around here yet. boo. i'll have to get back onto it.

uhh is this going somewhere

well, i can't really think of anything else. that's... that's not all i've been up to recently but it is in fact a lot of it. one of these days i might even get more into writing blogposts - part of why i don't do it is that the process is a bit unwieldy rn - but we'll see.

kisses,

s.
