computing devices are cursed constantly
you ever get a new device and immediately it's really broken?
i got a new computer the other day. it's a (refurbished) steam deck, but that really is pretty much just a pc integrated into a cool portable body with controllers on it. it's neat! it runs a custom linux distro by default, it's kind of janky but that's to be expected...
...and it keeps crashing? in ways that i haven't really seen any other people mention online?
now, in and of itself there's nothing particularly strange about that. maybe it's relatively common and i'm just looking for the wrong words. maybe i'm too linux savvy and think people are describing a different thing. maybe it really has a hardware fault. maybe i'm putting it in a situation.
but like, the ways it's crashing in are kind of inexplicable. as far as i can tell the cause of the crash is something like the compositor segfaulting, which doesn't seem to make much sense. there's also something going on with the battery - i guess battery problems could also cause inexplicable crashes - but it's not the same issues that i see people mention online
in fact, it just crashed while i was typing this up, and after i had reinstalled the os from a recovery disk just in case that might help. i really hope that i can get this fixed because i really don't want to return the unit right away. additionally, it's a refurbished one, so it's supposedly checked to work!
so far even system logs really do not illuminate the issue very much. i certainly hope i can get this figured out so i don't have to rma the thing!
update, a bit later
it does in fact appear that the issues might be something that people hae reported, namely, battery issues. i guess i'll have to try and get that solved. also, i guess the segfaults might not be related, since they're not that consistent.
anyway, i guess i'll try to get the battery low, then charge it again? if there's a reasonable way to do that anyway
